Old Chang Kee was established in 1956 in Singapore. For over half a century, Singaporeans and visitors have enjoyed the famous curry puffs – a hot snack filled with chicken, curried potatoes and a sliced of hardboiled egg, cooked with special herbs and spices.

Other than their signature curry puffs, Old Chang Kee also expanded their portfolio such as spring rolls, seafood balls, crab claws and fried chicken. Early this year, Hainanese Chicken Rice’O is launched- the iconic puff stuffed with fragrant rice, succulent chicken with Hainanese chili sauce.

At the first glance, the wholesome crust looks familiar to the signature curry puffs. I cut open the chunky pastry, and amazed by the strong aroma that resembles Hainanese Chicken Rice. As you can see from the photograph, the filling is stuffed with short brown rice, chicken and chili sauce. The heat from the chili sauce is one of the components closest to the chicken rice flavour.

Overall, this is an interesting attempt to incorporate one of the national dishes into a puff pastry. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, grab your Hainanese Chicken Rice’O at any Old Chang Kee outlets in Singapore before 28 February 2019.
